Interview mit Amy von Sugarpill

Ich hatte das Vergnügen die reizende Amy von Sugarpill Cosmetics zu ihrer Make Up Linie zu interviewen. Manche kennen sie vielleicht als Shrinkle und ihre erfolgreichen Mode- und Make Up Shops. Wie es hinter den Kulissen von Sugarpill aussieht, woher sie ihre Inspiration nimmt und welche Make Up Tipps sie für uns hat lest ihr hier (für das Interview im O-Ton bitte eine Etage tiefer zur Translation):

Wieso der Name Sugarpill?
Mir gefällt die Idee, dass Kosmetik eigentlich wie “sugar pills” (also Placebo-Pillen) wirken. Beide haben einen positiven Effekt auf den Benutzer. Dich mit knalligen Farben aufzubrezeln gibt dir einfach ein super Selbstwertgefühl.

Hast du einen Lieblingsdesigner oder Make Up Artist der dich inspiriert und beeinflusst?
Meine Idole unter den Make Up Artisten sind Kabuki und Kevyn Aucoin. Ich bewundere Kabukis verrückten Killerstyle und schätze Kevyn Aucoins Weisheiten. Einen Lieblingsdesigner habe ich nicht wirklich. Ich lasse mich gerne von bunten und schrillen Dingen inspirieren! Ich liebe das japanische Label 6%dokidoki. Und ich bin besessen von der TV Show „Toddlers and Tiaras“, vor allem wegen der schrecklich kitschigen Outfits.

Was macht Sugarpill so besonders und anders im Vergleich zu anderen Make Up Produkten?
Viele neue Make Up Labels verpacken einfach nur bestehende Produkte neu und packen dann ihr Logo drauf. Ich wollte etwas Einzigartiges anbieten, das man nicht schon Millionen Mal gesehen hat. Also habe ich mir die Zeit genommen ganz speziellen Farben und eine eigens für Sugarpill verwendete Formel zu kreieren. Ich wollte, dass die Qualität der Produkte im Vordergrund steht und nicht ausschließlich Design und Verpackung. Meine Produkte sind etwas ganz Besonderes, das du bestimmt nirgendwo sonst findest.
Ich finde es ist superwichtig, dass Make Up Spass macht, daher die bunte, super-girly Verpackung! Ich finde viele Kosmetikmarken nehmen sich ein bisschen zu ernst und bleiben lieber bei einem klassischen Design. Mit Sugarpill wollte ich bewusst ein Make Up Produkt kreieren, bei dem nicht nur die Qualität sondern auch die süße Aufmachung stimmt.

Sind deine Produkte vegetarisch/vegan produziert?
Ja, die meisten Sugarpill Lidschatten sind vegan! Das ist auch auf der Homepage gekennzeichnet um hier absolut kein Missverständnis zu schaffen. Wir sind
100 % cruelty free, d.h. bei uns wird nichts an Tieren getestet und wir arbeiten auch nicht mit Laboren, die an Tieren testen.

Wird es zukünftig noch mehr Farben und neue Produkte geben?
Auf jeden Fall! In ein paar Monaten kommen 12 brandneue Lidschattenfarben raus (gepresst und lose) und wir tüfteln gerade wie verrückt an neuen Produkten. Ich bin ein Workaholic, ihr könnt heuer also noch ganz viel neues erwarten!

Wo kann man deine Produkte kaufen?
Momentan gibt es die Produkte nur online auf www.sugarpill.net, aber wir möchten bald auch in Geschäften die Möglichkeit bieten Sugarpill gleich auszuprobieren und zu kaufen.

Welches Produkt deiner Kollektion muß man unbedingt haben?
Ooooh, das ist schwer, sie sind ja alle meine Babies. Ich finde sie alle ganz toll! Ich versuch’s trotzdem: Jeder sollte in einen guten schwarzen Lidschatten investieren und wir hören immer wieder unser Sugarpill Bulletproof sei der Beste. Mein persönlicher Favorit ist Afterparty, denn für mich geht es einfach nicht ohne blauen Lidschatten! Unsere Top-Seller sind Goldilux Loose Eyeshadow und unsere Burning Heart Pressed Eyeshadow Palette.

Dein N° 1 Make Up Tipp?
Niemals Angst haben davor zu experimentieren. Nicht zu viele Gedanken über Trends und Regeln machen, sondern einfach Spaß an der Sache haben! Oh, und gutes Licht beim Schminken. Natürliches Licht, z.B. neben dem Fenster, funktioniert am Besten. Es gibt nichts Schlimmeres als sich bei schwachem Licht zu schminken und dann die Wohnung mit einem orangenen Gesicht und ungleichem Augenmakeup zu verlassen.

Was wünschst du würden die Leute mehr tragen?
Knallig blauen Lidschatten, natürlich! Und ein Lächeln auf den Lippen. Ich wünschte die Leute auf der Straße würden sich öfter mal anlächeln.

Was kannst du jemandem raten der mit seiner eigenen Make Up Linie starten möchte?
Am Anfang verbrachte ich viel zu viel Zeit mit Angst und Zweifeln und dem „was wäre wenn“. Wenn ich noch mal beginnen müsste, würde ich eine Abzweigung nehmen, meine Unsicherheiten ignorieren und mit ganz viel Selbstsicherheit an die Sache rangehen, nach dem Motto „Augen zu und durch“!
Und ganz wichtig: bleibe deinem Style treu und hör auf dein Herz! Weder Trends nachzuhetzen noch sich selbst zu verbiegen und zu verändern nur um Geld zu machen, bringen dir Erfolg. Meine Freunde und ich machen oft Witze darüber, dass ich noch genauso aussehe wie vor 5 Jahren. Aber das ist OK so! Ich fühle mich toll dabei und ein außergewöhnlicher Style macht dein Label schließlich unvergesslich!

I had the chance to do an interview with the lovely Amy from Sugarpill cosmetics about her adorable make up line. Some of you might know her already under the name Shrinkle where she is successfully selling clothes and make up. Have a look behind the curtains of Sugarpill, see what inspires her and which make up advice she can give us and the beauty world:

How did you come up with the name Sugarpill?
I really liked the idea that cosmetics are like a sugar pill. They both produce positive psychological effects on the user. Dolling yourself up in bright colors can give you a huge boost of confidence!

Do you have a favorite make up artist/fashion designer who has influenced/inspired you?
My favorite makeup artists are Kabuki and the late Kevyn Aucoin. I adore Kabuki’s crazy killer style, and I try to live by Kevyn Aucoin’s wisdom. I don’t really have a favorite fashion designer – I’m inspired by all things bright and colorful! I love the Japanese brand 6%dokidoki’s aesthetic. And I watch the show Toddlers and Tiaras religiously for tacky fashion ideas.

What makes Sugarpill different from other make up lines?
A lot of the new makeup brands start out by repackaging pre-existing stock product and putting their sticker logo on it. I wanted to offer something unique that wasn’t already out there a million times, so I took the time to develop my own custom colors and have them specially formulated and made exclusively for Sugarpill. I didn’t want to rely on branding or image to sell my product–I made sure that the quality spoke for itself, and the product was something unique that you can’t find anywhere else.
I also think it’s important to have fun, which is why I went all out with the lacy, colorful, super-girly packaging! It seems like a lot of higher end brands take themselves too seriously and choose to go with sleek, plain packaging. I wanted Sugarpill to rival these other brands in quality but to also be adorable to look at.

Are your products vegetarian/vegan?
Yes, most Sugarpill eyeshadows are vegan! They are clearly marked on my website to avoid confusion. We are also 100% cruelty free and do not use labs that test on animals.

Will there be more colours and maybe additional products available in the future?
Definitely! We have about 12 new eyeshadow shades (both pressed and loose) coming out in a few months and are working hard on new product lines. I am a workaholic, so expect lots of fun stuff this year!

Do you plan to sell your products in a store as well?
Currently we’re only available online at www.sugarpill.net, but we are working on branching out to physical stores so everyone can try the goods in person.

The product/colour of your line everybody should get?
Ooooh that’s a hard one because they’re all my babies so I love them equally, heehee! But I’ll try. Everyone needs a really good basic matte black eyeshadow in their kit, and we’ve been told by lots of people that Sugarpill’s Bulletproof is the best black out there. As for my personal favorites, I can’t live without blue eyeshadow, so Afterparty is a must-have. Our top sellers are Goldilux loose eyeshadow, and our Burning Heart pressed eyeshadow palette.

Your number one make up tip?
Never be afraid to experiment. Don’t worry too much about following rules or trends, just have fun with it! Oh, and always use good lighting when applying makeup. Natural lighting by a window works best! There’s nothing worse than applying your makeup in a dimly lit bathroom, then stepping outside and realizing your face is orange and your eyes are lopsided.

What’s one thing you wish people would wear more of?
Bright blue eyeshadow, of course! And a smile. I wish strangers would smile at each other more often.

What could you recommend somebody who wants to start their own make up line?
In the beginning I wasted a lot of time worrying and imagining worst case scenarios. If I could do it all over again, I’d cut to the chase, ignore my insecurities, and just go for it with full confidence!
Also, stay true to your style and your heart. Don’t chase trends and change who you are just to make money. My friends and I joke about how my style hasn’t really changed in 5 years. But that’s okay! It works for me, and  a distinct style is what will make your brand memorable.
