L’Oréal fully supports the aim to eliminate animal testing.
The Group’s actions to find and validate alternative methods demonstrate its commitment to sustainable development. L’Oréal has not used laboratory animals for the testing of its finished cosmetic products for 20 years. This includes all products developed for the different brands within the L’Oréal group. L’Oréal fully met the 11 March 2009 deadline set up by the 7th amendment to the EU Cosmetics Directive that prohibits local or single exposure tests on animals. To achieve such results, the group made significant efforts to review its product safety testing methods to ensure that it continues to innovate while respecting its commitment to finding alternative solutions to animal testing. For more complex tests the European regulation deadline is scheduled in 2013. To address this issue of the full replacement of animal testing for the remaining endpoints, such as systemic toxicity, L’Oréal is working closely with members of the cosmetics industry, as well
as across diverse industry sectors and with the European Commission in the framework of the European Partnership on Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing (EPAA).
While the European Commission intends to take stock of progress made in research in 2011, the cosmetics industry is working relentlessly with the European Commission and other industrial sectors facing the animal testing issue. For its part, L’Oréal is developing an original integrated testing strategy to both preserve the safety of consumers and spare animals, but without compromising innovation. This distinctive approach is based on predictive safety and innovation methods, which not only use alternative methods and in vitro tests, but combine its unique resources and expertise: 100 years of cosmetic ingredient knowledge, thousands of toxicological and clinical data, 30 years’ experience in alternative safety research and a huge investment in the development of human skin models in its laboratories.
